New monument for Czech martyrs opened in Prague
In 1969, two Czech students set themselves on fire to protest the Soviet-led occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968. And now thirty years after their deaths, a new monument has been erected in their honour in Prague. Jana Kotalik has the details:

On January 16th,1969 Jan Palach, a student of Charles University, lit himself on fire on Wenceslav Square in the centre of Prague. Palach died several days later in the hospital. He was only 21. A similar act was committed by 19-year-old Jan Zajic on February 25th, 1969. The two acts of self immolation were protests against the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact armies. And these two demonstrations of bravery have made Palach and Zajic important Czech heroes and martyrs. Earlier, I visited the new memorial erected in front of the National Museum in Prague and spoke with a few passers-by:
